Titre : Epistemic and dynamic markers and their discursive functions in political and legal discourses in 1984

Résumé : This contribution deals with epistemic and dynamic modalities in political and legal discourses in 1984 by Gorges Orwell. It finds the markers and discursive functions of these two types of modalities in these two types of discourses. Through the method of document review, semantics and speech acts theories, some traces and discursive functions are discovered. The epistemic traces include might, will, would, should, certainty, perhaps and obvious. The discursive functions encompass low certainty, prediction, strong certainty, hypothesis and possibility. Dynamic markers are could not and cannot. Its discursive function is inability. Key words: discourse, dynamic, epistemic, function, legal, marker, modality, political.
