Titre : Power and Authority in Discourse: An analysis of pragmatic strategies in dan fullani’s one man, two votes
Auteur.e.s : Marius Eder BROU, .
Résumé : Power and authority are generally considered to stem from an institutional position, a legal mandate, or social recognition. However, in discourse, the expression of power and authority are intrinsically linked and do not exist independently of language; on the contrary, they are actively constructed, negotiated, and enacted through certain pragmatic strategies. The expression of power and authority appears as a pragmatic effect of language use, in which speakers mobilize linguistic resources to position themselves as legitimate holders of power and authority. Using a qualitative approach, this article examines how the expression of power and authority is pragmatically implemented in Dan Fulani’s book One Man, Two Votes. The study argues that pragmatic tools such as modality, speech acts, presuppositions, face management, and implicatures function as discursive processes that enable speakers to verbally control and dominate their interlocutors while limiting challenges. Consequently, the expression of power and authority is negotiated and stabilized within discourse. Keywords: Authority; Discourse; Pragmatic; Power; Strategies
